The “Boss”, Mimmo Gambino, opened shop here in Smithtown, New York, 1985; after creating numerous successful fine-dining establishments in New York City. Born and raised in “a small town you’ve never heard of in Palermo (Italy),” as he calls it, he migrated to New York City to pursue the American Dream. Focusing on his Sicilian upbringing, he instilled a new culture to the recipes we still use today
The reason we are famous...
In 1985, as you may know, “Hurricane Gloria”, went on a path of destruction throughout Long Island- ruining everything in it’s way. Smithtown, in particular, was obliterated beyond repair. Some people died, others lost their businesses & livelihood. The great people of Smithtown were without warmth, shelter, food, water, & most of all, electricity.
That is until someone noticed the “tiny new restaurant” somehow had it’s lights on.
That’s right, folks. CASA RUSTICA was the only building in town that still had power! Through the grace of God this miracle saved the lives of the people of Smithtown. These amazing citizens swarmed to our “tiny new restaurant” and we happily gave them warmth, shelter, water, & most of all, our magnificent Italian cuisine. Little did we know, our story was just about to begin.
